The main entrance to Toowong Cemetery — Brisbane’s largest cemetery — hosts the first “National” Great War ANZAC Memorials in Australia. The Cross of Sacrifice and The Stone of Remembrance were officially unveiled and dedicated on ANZAC Day 1924 (25 April) by Australian Governor-General, Lord Henry William Forster. A 10,886kg (10 tons) monolith of freestone (sandstone), The Stone of Remembrance, was sourced from a quarry at Helidon (a mere 106km journey by train and road away) at the instigation of Queensland’s ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee (ADCC). The Cross of Sacrifice was fashioned by renowned Toowong-based monumental masons, Messrs. A.L. Petrie & Son, according to specifications the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC) had set down for cemeteries located on former Great War battlefields across the globe. IWGC principal architect, Sir Edward Lutyens, came up with the design of what he called “Great War Stones” to be erected in war cemeteries containing no fewer than a thousand interments. It took a mere 10 months and 10 days from the 15 June 1923 unanimous ADCC resolution — moved by its Secretary, First AIF Chaplain LTCOL the Reverend Canon David John Garland — to then hew the Stone, translocate it to Toowong Cemetery, and then stage a Vice-Regal unveiling and dedication ceremony in front of more than 3,000 onlookers. On 5 November 2015, the-then Lord Mayor of Brisbane, the Right Honourable Councillor Graham Quirk, announced that Brisbane City Council had decided to name the precinct “Canon Garland Place” to honour the memory of “the architect of ANZAC Day”, Canon Garland. The area features immaculately curated gardens, a heritage-listed ablutions block, flagpole, on-street parking and interpretative signage. On Thursday morning, 4 April 2024, our 27th Governor General, his Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC CGMM (Retd.), stood on the same spot (in front of The Stone) as did our seventh Governor General, Lord Forster, on 25 April 1924.
